Approximately 13.8 billion years ago, the observable universe began its expansion from an extremely hot and dense state. Space expanded, matter formed, stars emerged and generations of stars produced many of the heavier elements from which planets, living organisms and, eventually, human beings would be made.<\/p>\n

Earth formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago. Life appeared much later, followed over immense periods by increasingly complex organisms. Modern humans occupy only a minute fraction of this history.<\/p>\n

The scale is difficult to comprehend. Human civilisation, agriculture, written language, cities and mechanical technology all belong to the final moments of a story measured in billions of years.<\/p>\n

Time existed long before anything was present to measure it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Human beings did not create time. What we created were ways of dividing it, recording it and organising our lives around it.<\/p>\n

The earliest measurements required no machinery. The rotation of the Earth produced day and night. The movement of the Moon provided another observable cycle. The changing position of the Sun and the progression of the seasons provided patterns that could be observed, remembered and eventually predicted.<\/p>\n

For early human societies, understanding these cycles had practical consequences. Seasonal change affected migration, hunting and later agriculture. The position of the Sun indicated the progression of the day. Repeated astronomical events provided reference points extending beyond individual human memory.<\/p>\n

From Observation to Measurement<\/h2>\n

Gradually, observation became measurement.<\/p>\n

Shadows could be used to divide the day. Water could be allowed to flow at a relatively consistent rate. Sand could pass through a narrow opening. Civilisations developed calendars and increasingly sophisticated systems for dividing days, months and years.<\/p>\n

The history of timekeeping is therefore not simply the history of clocks. It is the history of humanity attempting to impose measurement on something that never stops.<\/p>\n

The Mechanical Measurement of Time<\/h2>\n

Mechanical clocks represented a profound change. Time was no longer merely observed in the sky or estimated through natural processes; it could be represented mechanically through controlled movement.<\/p>\n

As clockmaking developed, mechanisms became smaller and more precise. Large public clocks eventually gave way to domestic clocks, portable watches and pocket watches.<\/p>\n

Time had moved from the heavens to the tower, from the tower to the home, and from the home to the pocket.<\/p>\n

Time Reaches the Wrist<\/h2>\n

Its next destination was the wrist.<\/p>\n

The wristwatch made measured time physically attached to the human body. A glance at the wrist could provide information that earlier generations had obtained from the position of the Sun, the sound of a public clock or a watch carried inside a pocket.<\/p>\n

This transformation required something remarkably simple.<\/p>\n

A strap.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Watch Strap<\/h2>\n

The strap contains no escapement, balance wheel or mainspring. It does not measure a second and contributes nothing to the accuracy of the movement. Its purpose is purely physical: it connects the instrument that measures time to the person whose life is being measured by it.<\/p>\n

That simplicity gives the watch strap an unusual place in the history of timekeeping.<\/p>\n

At one end of the story lies the formation of the universe billions of years ago. At the other is a small mechanical or quartz instrument secured around a human wrist.<\/p>\n
